Dear NEC staff and board,
I would like to take this time to thank you all for including my first play “Petal Push’n'” in your latest reading series. I can’t tell you what an honor it was to have Leslie Lee read my play and in turn give generous feedback, or how confident I became when Leslie assured me that my voice as a writer was worth hearing.
It was incredibly impressive to see how professionally and lovingly the reading was handled. Mamara McKinney (director) loved and understood the characters like only a “sistah” could. The perfectly chosen cast allowed me to see my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Elliot Lanes was wonderfully organized and thorough in all of his research and stage management. Even Charles Weldon sent fatherly words of encouragement from half-way across the country. Anthony and Jo made sure they were on hand to make sure things went smoothly, and they did.
It was an overall success and sent me away with a sense of accomplishment and duty. I am so grateful that NEC is still a place where one can safely grow and develop as an artist.
Wishing you continued success,
–
Ms.CJ Williams
C.J Williams. What a joy it was to work on the public reading of your play at New York’s Working Theatre. You play Petal Pushin’ is an inspired work full of rich characters from industrial Pennsylvania, with the kind of unexpected twists in structure and story that keep the audience and the director on their toes. Innovative, provocative, scholarly in it’s writing style, this piece was an honor to produce.
I hope you will continue to write and show the world your insight and expertise. Congratulations on a marvelously, entertaining piece of literature.
