FIRST ANNUAL MY AFRICAN DIASPORA SHORT STORY COMPETITION

We’re looking for fiction that is unique, stories with characters we’ll remember, plots that leave us thinking. The contest is open to anyone, any race, any country, any continent. The only caveat? First Novel Competition. The application deadline is Jan. 5, 2010; a winner will be announced in May. The contest will be judged by Bret Lott. The winning author will receive a book contract with the Hub City Writers Project, an award-winning independent press in Spartanburg, S.C. The winner will also receive a $1,000 advance against royalties, and Hub City will publish at least 1,500 hardback copies of the book, including a book for every public library branch in the state. Seeking new essays that explore death, dying, and end of life care, for a collection to be published by Southern Methodist
University Press. We’re looking for stories that transcend the “I” and find universal meaning in personal experiences. Hopes to include stories representing a wide variety of perspectives—from physicians, nurses, hospice workers, social workers, counselors, clergy, funeral directors, family members, and others. Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with a significant element of research or information. We’re looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice. Creative Nonfiction editors will award one $1,500 prize for Best Essay, and two $500 prizes for runners-up. The Walt Whitman Award brings first-book publication, a cash prize of $5,000, and a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center to an American who has never before published a book of poetry. The winning manuscript, chosen by an eminent poet, is published by Louisiana State University Press. The Academy purchases copies of the book for distribution to its members.The award was established in 1975 to encourage the work of emerging poets and to enable the publication of a poet’s first book. Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards
Established in 1995, this award recognizes outstanding translations into English of modern Italian poetry through a $5,000 book prize and a $25,000 fellowship, given in alternating years.The $5,000 Raiziss/de Palchi Book Prize is given in alternate years for the translation into English of a significant work of modern Italian poetry. The prize was established through a bequest by Sonia Raiziss Giop, a poet, translator, and longtime editor of the literary magazine Chelsea.Publishers may submit books published anytime in the past (not necessarily in 2009), but only books by living translators of standard (non-dialect) Italian are eligible. Self-published collections do not qualify. Postmark deadline: December 31, 2009.The judges will be announced later this year.

The STAGE International Script Competition
We began to foster such interactions with a competition for new plays about science and technology, offering a $10,000 prize to the best new play to explore scientific and/or technological stories and themes.  The STAGE Competition was launched in collaboration with the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), one of the prestigious California Institutes for Science Innovation. In addition to the monetary award, winners have opportunities for developing and promoting their winning script.

The Competition is now entering its fourth round. Plays are submitted from all over the world.

The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is seeking proposals from artists and writers for the third series of Poetry Projections, provisionally titled Poetry Projections III: On Correspondence. Revisiting the film poem as an avenue for creative collaborations, LIFT is seeking proposals for 10 commissioned films to be screened in Fall of 2010. Selected participants will be provided with:

• a temporary LIFT Membership
• a $200 artist fee for the premiere screening in the Fall of 2010 (Up to a maximum of two artist fees per film.)
• up to $1,000 in LIFT’s production equipment/facilities and post-production resources
• up to $1,000 in film, materials and services
• for artists outside the Toronto area, a limited amount of travel assistance may be available.

As an outgrowth of our original Emergency Relief Residencies, SFAI has instituted an ongoing Emergency Relief Residency to provide residencies for artists and writers whose lives and work are compromised by domestic strife, political upheaval or natural disasters. Residencies are by application only.

In response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, SFAI is ready to make available its facility to artists, writers and crafts people who lost homes, studios, art work or jobs.

The Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI) conducts a bi-annual competitive selection process for artist and writer residencies that focuses on the professional experience of the artist, the quality of their past work, and their potential to have a productive residency at SFAI.

The mission of The Haven Foundation is to strengthen and sustain the careers of freelance professional writers, artists and others connected with the entertainment industry across the United States. A professional is an individual who is committed to his/her industry or work, who has derived at least 1/3 (33.3%) of his/her income over the past three (3) years from his/her personal production, performance or other work in the industry. The qualified person must have experienced a recent, unforeseen emergency or triggering event that has significantly and adversely affected the qualified person’s ability to produce, perform and/or market his/her work and, thus, creates the need for immediate relief funds and/or assistance. The Foundation is not able to assist in situations of financial need that result solely from lack of employment, poor sales and/or poor business practices.
